What Is the Germany National D Visa for Students?
The Germany Student Visa (National Visa – Type D) is a long-term visa required for international students pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or preparatory studies in Germany.
It allows students to enter Germany and later convert the visa into a residence permit valid for the duration of their studies.
Who Needs a German Student Visa?
You must apply for a German student visa if you:
- Are a non-EU/EEA citizen
- Have a confirmed offer from a German university or Studienkolleg
- Plan to stay in Germany for over 90 days for studies
- Are still awaiting admission (conditional visa available)

Financial Requirements – Blocked Account & Proof of Funds
As of 2024, you must show at least €11,208 (approx. ₹10–11 lakhs) per year as living expense proof.
Ways to Show Proof:
- Blocked Account (e.g. Fintiba, Expatrio, Kotak Mahindra)
- Scholarship Letter
- Sponsor’s affidavit + income documents (less preferred)
