Family Migration to Australia

National Occupational Classification
5/5 - (1 vote)

Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens have the opportunity to sponsor their family members to migrate to Australia. Recognizing the importance of keeping families and dependent relatives together, the Australian Government has established the family migration scheme. This scheme allows eligible individuals to sponsor their parents, dependent children, or other relatives to join them in Australia, either on a temporary or permanent basis. The Australian Family Visa covers a range of family categories, including relatives, siblings, and parents, extending to the immediate family unit.

To qualify as a sponsor, one typically needs to demonstrate financial capability to support the family member for up to two years after their arrival in Australia. In some cases, sponsors may be required to provide an Assurance of Support (AoS), which involves the payment of a financial bond that extends for up to ten years. Applying for a family visa in Australia presents a viable option for bringing your family to live in the country.

Child Visa (Subclass 101)

Child Visa Subclass 101

The Australian Child Visa is designed for dependent children under the age of 18, or dependent individuals over 25 who are unable to work due to a mental or physical disability. This visa also applies to adopted children or stepchildren of a sponsor. Since children typically immigrate to Australia with their parents, it is essential to demonstrate the authenticity of the relationship to the Department when applying for the visa.

The increased visa application fee serves as a contribution towards covering ongoing health costs associated with the applicants’ age.

Parent Visa (Subclass 103)

The Parent visa is designed for parents desiring to relocate to Australia to be with their children. To apply, sponsorship from one of their children is required, and the sponsoring child must be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident residing in Australia.

Within the Family Stream visas, the processing priority for parent visa applications is the lowest when compared to other family members, such as partners and children.

To be eligible for a Parent Visa, the parent must have at least half of the applicant’s children residing in Australia, and the applicant must be under 65 years of age or not yet eligible to receive the Australian age pension.

Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)

Child Visa Subclass 101

The Aged Parent Visa closely resembles the parent visa, with the key distinction being that the applicant must be of an age eligible for the Australian Age Pension. As of July 1, 2017, the qualifying age is 65 years and six months for both genders. This age requirement will incrementally rise by six months every two years, reaching 67 by July 1, 2023.

It’s important to note that meeting the age criteria doesn’t automatically guarantee receipt of the age pension. Eligibility for the age pension in Australia requires being a permanent resident for a minimum of ten years.

Aged Dependent Relative Visa (Subclass 838, 114)

Carer Visa (Subclass 116, 836)

The Aged Dependent Relatives Visa is designed for unattached individuals (including widowed and divorced) who are older, with women aged 60 and above and men aged 65 and above. The sponsor must be either an Australian citizen, an eligible permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen residing permanently in Australia. Given the considerable demand for family migration visas, only a limited number of spaces are open.
