How Express Entry Draws Work;
The Express Entry system facilitates permanent residence applications in two steps:
Expression of Interest: Individuals express their interest in immigrating to Canada by completing an online profile. The system screens the profile to determine eligibility for skilled immigration programs. Eligible profiles are placed in the Express Entry pool and assigned a CRS score.
Invitations and Application: Candidates in the pool are ranked by CRS score, and regular draws are conducted to invite candidates for permanent residence. Draws are either general, based solely on CRS scores, or category-based, focusing on specific job experiences or language proficiency.
After receiving an ITA:
Candidates have 60 days to submit an application or decline the invitation.
Unsuccessful candidates or those who decline an ITA remain in the pool for up to 12 months.
Upon submission, an immigration officer assesses the application for CRS score, program eligibility, and admissibility. Successful applicants receive permanent resident status upon landing in Canada.
Express Entry Processing Time;
Processing times vary but aim to process 80% of applications within 6 months. Currently, most Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) applications are processed within 5 months. Factors affecting processing times include the specific program, application volume, and completeness.
Category-Based Draws;
Canada introduced category-based draws on May 31, 2023, targeting qualified immigrants in 82 occupations to address labor market gaps in sectors like healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture, and agri-food. This initiative enhances opportunities for skilled workers in these specific fields to become permanent residents.
